As a follow-up to our dual application for the Product Designer role at Anthropic, we undertook a weekend-long design challenge to showcase our skills. Rather than simply telling about our capabilities, we demonstrated them by developing an AI Fact Checker feature for Claude. This “show, don’t tell” approach allowed us to highlight our product sense, user-centric design philosophy, and ability to tackle complex AI-related challenges.

Problem

AI models, including Claude, can sometimes produce inaccurate or misleading information, leading to user mistrust and potential misinformation spread.

Goals

  • Design a seamless fact-checking feature within the Claude interface
  • Increase user trust in AI-generated content
  • Reduce the spread of misinformation
  • Improve overall quality and transparency of AI outputs
  • ‘Show’ don’t ‘tell’ our design chops and product sense

Hurdles

  • Limited timeframe (weekend-long challenge)
  • Need for seamless integration with existing Claude interface
  • Reliance on external fact-checking API (Google’s Fact Check Explorer)
  • Requirement for real-time or near real-time fact-checking

Process

Our approach centered on rapid ideation and user-centric design. We followed these key steps:

scope

Conducted a thorough analysis of the problem space and user needs

Brainstorm

Brainstormed potential solutions and feature sets

User persona

Created user personas and journey maps

Wireframes & Prototype

Developed low-fidelity wireframes and prototypes

Iteration

Iterated on designs based on peer feedback

Presentation

Designed slide deck to quickly preset our work and send to Anthropic

Solution

Here’s how the fact-checker works: Users simply highlight the portion of Claude’s response they wish to verify and click the “Fact Check” button. This triggers a sidebar that displays an overall accuracy score for the highlighted text. The sidebar also breaks down each fact, marking it as true, false, or partially true, and providing a summary for each. If any part of the response is identified as false, the tool suggests corrections, guiding users toward more accurate information. This seamless, intuitive workflow helps ensure that users can confidently interact with AI-generated content.

We designed an AI Fact Checker with the following key features:

solutions

  • Text highlighting functionality within the Claude interface
  • “Fact check” button appearing when text is highlighted
  • Sidebar integration for displaying fact-check results
  • Overall accuracy score for highlighted text
  • Breakdown of individual facts with status (correct, incorrect, partially correct)
  • Sources for fact verification and confidence levels
  • Correction suggestions for inaccurate information
  • User feedback mechanism (dispute, helpful, not helpful)
  • History tab for past fact-checks

We also created a slide deck as a convenient way to show our solution. Which included:

Slide Deck

  • An overview of the problem and our approach

  • Links to all of our design process

  • A breakdown of key features and a link to the prototype

  • Projected impact and next steps for implementation

  • Our contact information

Impact

While we couldn’t measure real-world impact due to the nature of the challenge, we identified several potential positive outcomes:

enhanced user trust

By providing real-time fact-checking, users would gain confidence in the accuracy of Claude’s responses, leading to increased trust in the AI system.

misinformation reduction

The fact-checker could significantly reduce the spread of AI-generated misinformation, contributing to a more informed digital ecosystem.

improved ai literacy

Users interacting with the fact-checker would develop a better understanding of AI capabilities and limitations, fostering critical thinking skills.

streamlined workflow

Content creators, researchers, and professionals using Claude could work more efficiently, with reduced time spent on manual fact-checking.

ethical ai usage

The feature would promote responsible AI usage across various industries, setting a new standard for transparency in AI interactions.

continuous improvement

User feedback and fact-checking data could be leveraged to enhance Claude’s accuracy over time, creating a virtuous cycle of improvement.

industry leadership

By implementing such a feature, Anthropic could position itself as a leader in responsible AI development, potentially influencing industry-wide practices.

Conclusion

The AI Fact Checker design challenge allowed us to showcase our product sense and design skills while addressing a critical issue in AI interaction. Key learnings included:

Reflection

  • The importance of balancing speed and accuracy in fact-checking
  • The need for transparent and understandable fact-checking processes
  • The value of integrating user feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement
  • The complexity of handling nuanced or context-dependent information

Next Steps

To further develop and implement the AI Fact Checker, we recommend:

future

  • Conducting user testing with Claude users to refine the interface and functionality
  • Exploring additional fact-checking APIs to enhance accuracy and coverage
  • Developing a system for handling complex or nuanced topics
  • Creating a roadmap for expanding fact-checking capabilities to images and videos
  • Establishing a process for continuous updating of the fact-checking system with the latest information
