Elite Insights provides software for media companies to run ‘best of’ campaigns, where local businesses compete for top titles, generating engagement and revenue.

In a two-week sprint, I designed a user-friendly Campaign Wizard for Elite Insights, aiming to boost revenue by enabling businesses to set up their ‘best of’ campaigns independently. While campaign setup was straightforward, it involved repetitive tasks that were taking up valuable time for the small Elite Insights team. This project sought to offload these tedious but simple tasks to clients, freeing up the team to focus on growth and allowing the company to take on more clients.

Problem

Elite Insights needed a self-managed option for their ‘best of’ campaigns to reduce internal workload and increase scalability.

Goals

  • Create a user-friendly wizard interface for campaign setup
  • Guide clients through the simple but multi-step process
  • Reduce the repetitive workload on the Elite Insights team
  • Empower users to manage their own campaigns
  • Increase the company’s capacity to take on new clients without expanding the team

Hurdles

  • Two-week timeline
  • Working independently without a team
  • Ensuring compatibility with existing Elite Insights systems
  • Maintaining the comprehensive nature of the platform while simplifying the user experience

Process

I began by immersing myself in Elite Insights’ ecosystem and understanding the campaign setup process in depth.

steps

  • Conducting Zoom meetings to grasp the project scope and product details
  • Documenting the step-by-step process for campaign setup
  • Analyzing previous in-house design attempts
  • Creating wireframes for the new wizard interface
  • Iterating based on minimal change requests
  • Developing high-fidelity designs and preparing handoff materials

Solution

The final Campaign Wizard design broke down the complex setup process into five clear, manageable steps. This structure allows users to progress through the setup process logically and at their own pace, with clear guidance at each stage.

General info

Set campaign name, timeline, requirements, date phases, and website placement

Design

Decide on color scheme, instructions, banner images, and winner titles

Categories

Choose the list of categories businesses can enter

Products

Selection of promotional products to sell to participating businesses (e.g., banner ads, featured listings) to enhance their visibility in the campaign

Bundles

Create optional product bundles at discounted prices

Impact

While specific data is not available due to the contracted nature of the project, the Campaign Wizard has been successfully implemented and is actively in use on Elite Insights’ platform

The potential impact of this project includes:

reduced support

Reduction in customer support tickets related to campaign setup

Increased satisfaction

Increased user satisfaction with the campaign creation process

Faster setup

Decreased average campaign setup time for new users

user autonomy

Enhanced user autonomy in managing their own campaigns

improved scalability

Increased capacity for Elite Insights to take on new clients without expanding the team

Conclusion

The Elite Insights Campaign Wizard project demonstrated the power of user-centered design in simplifying complex processes. By breaking down the campaign setup into manageable steps and creating an intuitive interface, we were able to empower users while potentially reducing support needs.

Reflection

  • The importance of thoroughly understanding the existing process before redesigning
  • The value of clear, step-by-step guidance in complex setups
  • How empowering users can benefit both the client and the business
  • The critical role of time management in projects with tight deadlines
  • The necessity of rapid feedback loops to gain deep product understanding quickly, especially under time constraints

Next Steps

To further improve the Campaign Wizard and expand its capabilities, I would consider:

future features

  • Conducting user testing to gather quantitative data on the wizard’s effectiveness
  • Exploring AI-powered suggestions for campaign optimization
  • Developing a template library for quick-start campaign setups
  • Integrating analytics to provide users with real-time campaign performance insights
